History

Over 35 Years of Serving Orange County

NeighborWorks Orange County has a 37-year history of meeting the housing needs of working families throughout Orange County's communities. Over the years, we have utilized a variety of strategies and programs to effectively fulfill our mission and commitment to our clients.

1977

La Habra Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) was established.

1980 

Santa Ana Neighborhood Housing Services was established.

1987 

Rose Espinoza bought her home through La Habra NHS. With her community involvement and NeighborWorks leadership training, she started an after-school program from her garage to address her concern for growing gang activity and low education attainment of children in her neighborhood. Rosie's Garage turned into a nationally recognized program and Rose Espinoza has served in La Habra's City Council as Mayor, as well as Council Member. She continues her involvement with NeighborWorks Orange County as a member of our Board of Directors.

1998 

La Habra NHS and Santa Ana NHS merged to form the Neighborhood Housing Services of Orange County and expanded services to the entire region.

1999 

Grand opening of NHS Orange County’s HomeOwnership Center in the Anaheim office.

2000 

NHS Orange County became a certified Community Development Financial Institution.

2001 

NHS Orange County started its Individual Development Empowerment Account Program, an education and savings initiative that includes a 3:1 match intended to encourage preparation for homeownership.

2001 

NHS Orange County became a HUD-Approved Housing Counseling Agency.

2006 

NHS Orange County began providing financial education at women’s shelters and at non-profit organizations that serve homeless people. A large majority of the students who complete NHS Orange County’s financial education program at the centers are women (ages 20 to 45) with children.

2007 

In response to community need, NHS Orange County began providing comprehensive foreclosure counseling.

2008 

NHS Orange County launched the HomeAgain program in which NHS Orange County purchases distressed properties, refurbishes them, and resells them to homeowners.

2010 

NHS Orange County began the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) program.The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded NHS Orange County $7.5 million of NSP2 funds as the lead agency in a consortium with six other non-profit organizations. 

2012 

Changed its name from Neighborhood Housing Services of Orange County to NeighborWorks Orange County.

2013 

NeighborWorks Orange County moved to its new location in Orange, California.

2013 

NeighborWorks Orange County expanded its services to offer Full Brokerage Realty Services, acting as the only Non-Profit Realty Services provider in Orange County.

2013 

NeighborWorks Orange County became an AmeriCorps VISTA site host.

2014

NeighborWorks Orange County receives Green Designation from NeighborWorks America for having a comprehensive commitment to sustainable operations.

2015

NeighborWorks Orange County receives the 2015 National Award for Excellence in Community Building.  A recognition for it's community building program's ability to strengthen residents' voices, cultivate local leaders, engage community members, and share best practices.
